Is there the need for a new literacy approach?
Anyone who thinks that teaching the alphabet is simple and that challenges at school will not arise until a later stage, is overlooking the fact that the written word is the vehicle that transports us along our entire educational pathway.
For beginners, only the best will do! Therefore, here the currently available comprehensive research results were put into practice by clockwork.
In 2003, the OECD declared the improvement of literacy teaching to be the first educational goal worldwide. The flood of materials in markets and Youtube channels has been rising since.
However, reading and writing skills have deteriorated. Neither games nor haptic letters brought about the hoped-for change.
Brain research enables to understand, why reinforcing the measures increases the problem. The dividing line between what supports the brain development and what impedes it, runs during childhood between the concrete and the abstract world. The shape of a letter is abstract, it has no function as such. The shape of concrete objects such as e.g. a fork or a spoon, has an obvious function.
In order to make practical use of the latest findings and to develop a key that corresponds to the child's brain, scientists and schools in more than 10 countries have been consulted over the course of a decade.
What is different about ABCDirekt?
There is nothing abstract, everything is concrete. This makes the ABC an interactive fairytale and resource for a broad variety of activities. Clapping, dancing, speaking, listening, painting, drawing and learning with all the senses: an adventure journey, where adults and children uncover potential together and children can deepen their knowledge in a self-directed way.
The illustrations and templates are hand-drawn with simple yet dynamic lines that help the mirror neurons of the child's hand get into their own activity. The choice of words provides the brain's receptionist, the hippocampus, with the necessary pinch of surprise, which this Novelty Detector needs to stay on the ball and not switch to stand-by mode. The sound-full texts are embedding gently and quickly also new terms into the memory and round off the vocabulary.
How are neuro-physiological findings applied ?
Here the alphabet is stored in the form of contextual and emotional experiences, haptic fine-motor training, as well as visual and auditory stimuli by a directly experienced meaningfulness that is relevant to the child. This results in tightly linked neural networks that work sustainably in a focused way.
"That's exactly how things have to happen" Elena Dobrovolschi, clinical psychologist and director of UCOS, Sibiu.
Where is the journey going?
Language and writing form the gate of human encounter. Let's help children walk free from fear through this gate, experiencing language and writing in a culture where fear or hate messages do not accelerate, but connectedness is able to grow in the spirit of humanity for each and everyone of us.
